Target Audience: Primary teachers, Secondary maths teachers, Learning support team (SENCO equivalent) and senior leadership team in school/colleges, Parents/carers

Session 1: Dyscalculia and Specific Learning Difficulties in Mathematics

Explore the characteristics of dyscalculia, how it differs from other mathematical learning difficulties, and the key indicators educators can recognise in the classroom. Participants will also examine prevalence rates and the impact of co-occurring neurodiverse conditions on mathematical learning.

Session 2: Understanding and Addressing Maths Anxiety

Examine the physical and psychological effects of maths anxiety and its impact on learners, educators, and families. This session explores the cycle of maths anxiety and provides practical strategies to build confidence and foster positive mathematical experiences at school and at home.

Session 3: Assessment of Dyscalculia and Difficulties in Mathematics

Learn how to identify and assess pupils experiencing difficulties with mathematics using checklists, screeners, and assessment frameworks. Participants will gain an understanding of diagnostic pathways and how assessment can be used to inform effective teaching and intervention.

Session 4: Strategies to Support Learners with Dyscalculia and Mathematical Learning Difficulties

Discover evidence-informed teaching approaches that develop key mathematical foundations, including number sense, operations, place value, fractions, and decimals. The session also explores the effective use of manipulatives and mathematical games to enhance understanding, engagement, and confidence in mathematics.

Bio of Presenter: Robert Jennings

Rob is the co-founder of The Dyscalculia Network, an organisation that provides training and advice for teachers and parents supporting pupils with maths difficulties.

He has over 15 years’ experience teaching young people with special educational needs. Over the past decade, he has specialised in supporting children who struggle with maths, working across both independent and state schools.

Rob is a member of the CRESTED Council, where he represents issues relating to dyscalculia and maths difficulties across specialist schools throughout the UK.

He holds an OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (Distinction) from Helen Arkell. He is also co-author of The Maths Difficulties and Dyscalculia Assessment, published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers in July 2025. This assessment is unique in that it not only measures scoring accuracy but also explores the strategies and techniques learners use when tackling key areas of foundational maths.

Rob has delivered presentations at a wide range of educational exhibitions and has worked with schools, colleges, and universities both across the UK and internationally.
