This session connects research with practice, focussing on working-memory limitations, the instructional hierarchy, and practical techniques for building mathematics fluency. Participants will learn why fluency with foundational math topics is essential for learning more complex mathematics and will leave with evidence-based strategies they can implement in their classrooms.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • Explaining the instructional hierarchy and its implications for mathematics instruction
  • Implementing instructional techniques appropriate for the acquisition and fluency stages of learning
  • Using worked examples effectively to improve student success in mathematics
  • Applying evidence-based strategies to build fluency with mathematics facts

Bio of Presenter: Professor Anna Stokke

Professor Anna Stokke is a mathematics professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Winnipeg and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education at La Trobe University. She is a recipient of the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s highest recognition for post-secondary teaching excellence and educational leadership.

Her work focusses on promoting evidence-informed approaches to mathematics teaching and improving student mathematics achievement. She is co-founder and President of Archimedes Math Schools, a non-profit after-school math program for children, and host of the podcast Chalk & Talk, where she engages with leading education experts on effective approaches to mathematics teaching. Through her public engagement and presentations, she helps educators bridge the gap between research and classroom.
