Biography

Úna O’Driscoll is a graduate of Mary Immaculate College in Limerick City, where she completed her Bachelor of Education. Her areas of expertise are in mathematics, digital technologies and wellbeing. She is currently a full-time primary school teacher and holds the position of Assistant Principal 1 in her school in Limerick city. She works part-time as an associate with the PDST in the area of Digital Technologies. Having obtained first-class honours in the liberal arts mathematics component of her degree, Úna also teaches part-time in in the Liberal Arts Department of Mathematics and Computer Studies in Mary Immaculate College. She is the regional manager of Lego Education in Limerick and Clare, managing camps for children from 6 years of age to teenagers. The Balanced Approach to Literacy Development in the Early Years draws on international research, evidence based practice and samples of that practice in Irish primary schools to give a coherent and comprehensive guide to teachers. It is also aligned with the new Primary Language Curriculum.

This is a resource that can be used by class teachers working with children from Junior Infants to First Class. It may also be helpful to schools who have identified the need to improve reading and literacy standards as part of the school-self-evaluation process. Some schools may also like to use the resource to support the work of a professional learning community focusing on literacy.
